Meet the Team – Q&A with Zoe Conning from Amana Lettings

Each week we will be speaking to a member of the Amana team, this week it’s Zoe Conning, Managing Director of Amana Lettings – one of our sister companies!

Firstly, tell us a little bit about yourself

I’m the managing director of Amana Lettings (formally Amplo Lettings), I started off in property about 8 years ago back when I was a student in Swindon. I ended up doing that for 4-5 years and ended up moving back home with mum dad, had an array of jobs which in hindsight was just getting me prepared to run a business.

I worked in IT, Cyber Security, GDPR, Business Training and Customer Customer before falling into the arms of Scott Williams and Matthew Timms, my former business partners and starting Amana Lettings (formally Amplo Lettings).

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I would say my favorite part of the job is helping others, it may sound really cheesy. It’s a case of helping landlords because we know we are providing them with a good service 24 hours a day and taking away their stress of managing tenants & HMOs.

Equally, helping tenants find somewhere to live and offering them a 24 hour service.

What is the most challenging part of the job?

A love that Matt said working with Scott. The most challenging part is probably shutting off at 5pm and equally having the wait till 9am to start.

I’ve responded to emails at half 11 at night and picked up calls at 1am when it’s not urgent. But because I’m sat on my phone or just before I go to bed, I’ll check – it’s difficult to shut off when it’s your own business and you have a level of exception if you were in the landlord or the tenant’s shoes.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Don’t have anxiety is probably what I would advise my younger self.

I think there were a lot of times where I would worry about whether I was on the right path or doing the right thing. Now I’m very much like whatever will be will be, everything happens for a reason. If we don’t take on a property or we don’t take on that landlord for whatever reason instead of beating myself up about it, we go right okay, perhaps we could have done this differently but if we couldn’t do anything differently, it wasn’t meant to be and we move on.

Who or What is your inspiration?

My inspiration is Grace Beverley. She got a great fitness brand, she has done loads of podcasts, she has written a book and she is such a huge advocate of don’t fall into this toxic positivity 5am club trap – that you have to follow these rules to be successful.

You find your own paths, whatever works works. For example like my previous answer, if working 24/7 isn’t sustainable, don’t do it. But if it works for you, it works for you.

Top 3 Podcasts / Books?

My favourite book is Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter.

My favourite podcasts are the Stephen Bartlett podcast and the High-Performance podcast.

If you could add one thing to the Amana Office, what would it be?

I would add a gym to the office so I can spend more time at the office. I really like the office and I already spend a lot of time here.

So if there was a gym and a bed, I would probably never leave (because I have no friends).

What are you looking forward to in the next 12 months?

I’m really looking forward to seeing how the Lettings side of the business grows.
