The rise of rental prices

Did you know that rent in the UK’s private rented sector increased by 1.3% in the last 12 months?!

In England alone, rents increased by 1.3%, in Scotland there was a year on year increase of 0.8% and in Wales they were up by 1.2%, while in Northern Ireland they increased 1.9% in the year to June 2019!

According to the government’s Family Resources Survey, nearly three-quarters of 16 to 24-year-olds and almost half of 25 to 34-year-olds rent from a private landlord.

Zoopla report suggests that the typical tenant in the UK spends nearly a third of their earnings on rent (31.8%), slightly less than the peak in 2016.

BUT, tour landlord can’t just increase your rent whenever they like, or by any amount. They need to follow certain rules if they want you to pay more – these depend on the type of tenancy you have.
